The foundation of the Department of Biology was coincided with the foundation of College of Sciences in 2001 where the first batch (80 male and female students) was enrolled. The first batch graduated in the academic year 2004-2005, where the number of graduates was 60 for the first try and 15 during the second try. After that, the department continued in graduating the batch after batch until last year where the total number of the graduates was 405 in its 8th round. The department has a number of classrooms and each one accommodates 75 students and equipped with a display screen and show devices.
Moreover, the department has laboratories for Botany, Zoology, and Microbiology in addition to a laboratory for Biotechnology and another one for the postgraduate studies. Each lab contains the basic necessary equipments for scientific research and teaching purposes. The department has a number of qualified staff members with different specific disciplines in addition to the presence of a number of postgraduate students enrolled in universities inside and outside Iraq.
